You do not need to buy or read the standards to print a check. You do need to know which three constraints they impose, because those are the ones that cause rejects.
What the standards cover
- Physical dimensions. Checks fall within a defined size range. Personal checks are commonly around 6 by 2.75 inches, business checks around 8.5 by 3.5 inches. Anything outside the range jams sorting equipment.
- MICR line content and placement. Field order, the four framing symbols, character size and pitch, and the position of the band relative to the bottom edge. See what is a MICR line.
- The E-13B character set itself.
- Paper characteristics. Weight and stiffness ranges so documents feed reliably.
- Image quality, which became critical once checks began clearing as images.
Why image quality became the important part
Under check truncation, the paper check is usually scanned at the point of deposit and the image clears electronically; the original is often never transported. Everything about your check is judged from that image:
- Contrast between the printing and the paper background.
- Legibility of the payee, both amounts and the date.
- A clean MICR band with no interference.
- No clipped edges — scanners need the full document boundary.
This is why very dark or busy check stock backgrounds are a bad idea, and why draft-mode printing causes trouble even when the check looks fine to you on the desk.
The three things to get right
- Use standard-size stock from a reputable supplier rather than improvising a layout.
- Do not scale the page when printing, so MICR characters keep their specified size and pitch.
- Print at full quality on light stock, so the scanned image is high contrast.
Get those three right and the remaining hundreds of pages of specification are somebody else's problem.
Mobile deposit is the strictest reader
A payee photographing your check with a phone is the harshest test your printing will face: uneven lighting, an angled camera, an automatic crop. Checks that clear fine at a teller window sometimes fail mobile capture. The fixes are the same three above, plus keeping the area around the MICR band clear and using stock with a light background.
Standards versus your bank
Standards define what processing equipment expects. Your bank's own policy defines what it will accept from you, and the two are not identical — see do banks accept home-printed checks. When they differ, the bank's policy is the one that governs your account.
