MICR stands for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. The technology dates to the 1950s and is still what makes check clearing work at volume.
The fields, left to right
Reading a standard US personal check from the left edge of the MICR band:
- Auxiliary on-us field — optional, used on business checks to carry the check number.
- Transit / routing field — nine digits identifying the bank, framed by the transit symbol on both sides.
- On-us field — your account number, and on personal checks usually the check number, followed by the on-us symbol.
- Amount field — blank when you write the check. The bank of first deposit prints the amount here during processing.
The four special symbols — transit, on-us, amount and dash — are what tell the reader where one field ends and the next begins. They are why the MICR line cannot simply be typed in a normal font.
Why magnetic ink
The characters are printed with iron-oxide toner and magnetized as the document passes the reader head, producing a distinctive waveform per character. The advantage over purely optical reading is robustness: a MICR line that is stamped, smudged, folded or written over is often still readable magnetically, because the signal comes from the ink rather than from the visible contrast.

Position matters as much as content
The MICR band occupies a defined strip along the bottom edge of the document, and the characters must sit within it at the specified size and spacing. Two practical consequences:
- Never scale the page when printing. Scale-to-fit changes character dimensions and pitch.
- Check your printer's bottom margin. Some printers cannot print close enough to the bottom edge, which pushes the line out of position. Details in check printing alignment.
Keep the band clear: no stray text, no logos, no handwriting, no staples, no tape.
What happens when it cannot be read
A check with an unreadable MICR line is not void. It falls out of automated processing and is handled by exception, which typically means:
- Slower clearing, sometimes by days.
- A per-item fee charged by some banks.
- Higher chance of a keying error.
At one check a month that is an inconvenience. At two hundred a month it is a real cost, and it is the reason volume printers use proper magnetic toner.
The E-13B font
E-13B contains ten digits and four symbols, with shapes deliberately designed so their magnetic waveforms are distinguishable. It is the North American standard; much of Europe uses CMC-7 instead, which is why a check layout is not internationally portable.
Fonts that merely look like E-13B are common and are not sufficient on their own — the characters must also be printed at the correct size, pitch and position, which is what check printing software handles for you.
